This was called the \u2018Safe System\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to 2024, and the compliance requirements were extended to the \u2018Progressive Safe System\u2019, which required all HGVs over 12 Tonnes with a safety rating of less than 3 stars to feature a Moving Off Information System (MOIS), Blind Spot Information System (BSIS), Camera Monitoring, Audio Warnings, and Side Underrun Protection.<\/p>\n<p>This scheme has been built around reduction of incidents in London between Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) and HGVs. But how successful has it been so far?<\/p>\n<h2>The impacts of the Progressive Safe System on Incident Reduction<\/h2>\n<p>As of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/info-for\/media\/press-releases\/2025\/november\/vulnerable-road-users-deaths-and-serious-injuries-in-collisions-with-hgvs-fall-50-per-cent-under-mayor-s-lorry-safety-scheme?utm_campaign=25%2011%20FORS%20eNews%20-%2025%20November&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_bE4Uh_fI1StBaM62IfTPaP7mXnqZ3ngRFU27MJqjr0Qs48VKZIIJw-xAIbw1ChYA_cvSGIUXeX8kAVjIj77zgNoIVXQdBKJ30KaI3StKEBSl6i2k&amp;_hsmi=124130059&amp;utm_content=124130059&amp;utm_source=hs_email#:~:text=Road%20Safety%20Week%2C%20led%20annually,to%20make%20London%27s%20streets%20safer.\">17th November 2025<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50% reduction in deaths + serious injuries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>71 people per year in 2017-2019 to 35 people in 2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means that there is a clear correlation between the scheme and incident reduction.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s next for DVS?<\/h2>\n<p>Whilst no official details have been confirmed, we know that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The scheme is part of \u2018Vision Zero\u2019 &#8211; aiming for 0 deaths &#8211;\u00a0 meaning progress still needs to be made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Previously, progression has seen the required safety rating go from 1 star -&gt; 3 star &#8211; Could 5 star minimum be the next stage?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There are talks of <a href=\"https:\/\/motortransport.co.uk\/industry-news\/government-eyes-national-rollout-of-londons-direct-vision-standard\/27212.article#:~:text=Government%20eyes%20national%20rollout%20of,design%20features%20in%20Great%20Britain.%E2%80%9D\">expanding the scheme<\/a> outside London, as well as similar schemes being introduced internationally, for example in Milan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that safety and compliance standards will continue to expand, in both the UK and internationally.
