Bin Safe: AI-Powered Bin Lift Protection for Safer Waste Collection Operations

Waste collection is one of the most safety-critical environments in commercial transport. With crews working under time pressure, in tight residential streets, and alongside heavy moving equipment, the risk of serious injury is always present.

That’s why Parksafe Group has developed Bin Safe.  This AI-powered safety solution has been designed specifically to protect workers operating around automated bin lift mechanisms on refuse collection vehicles (RCVs).

Part of the Parksafe Group ZONE AI range, Bin Safe is built to reduce one of the most dangerous hazards in waste collection: the risk of a person being trapped or crushed beneath the bin lift.

The Hidden Risk in Automated Bin Lift Operations

Automated bin lifts have transformed productivity across modern waste fleets, but they also introduce an obvious danger zone: the area directly beneath the lifting mechanism.

If a worker slips, trips, crouches to retrieve something, or enters the lift area unexpectedly, there is potential for catastrophic injury.

Traditional warning methods like alarms, signage, or proximity sensors often fail because they:

  • rely on people reacting fast enough
  • detect objects rather than people
  • trigger too often, causing disruption and “alarm fatigue”

The waste industry needs a smarter approach — one that protects people without slowing down collections unnecessarily.

Introducing Bin Safe: Automatic AI Bin Lift Lockout

Bin Safe is an automatic bin lift lockout system that uses an AI camera to detect human presence in the danger zone beneath the bin lift.

If a person enters the calibrated detection zone, Bin Safe immediately halts the bin lift mechanism to prevent movement until the area is clear.

This provides an additional layer of protection for waste collection crews, helping reduce the risk of serious injury around lifting operations.

How Bin Safe Works

Bin Safe has been designed to be simple, effective, and practical for real-world waste collection environments.

1. AI Camera Detection Under the Bin Lift

A dedicated AI camera is installed and calibrated to monitor a tight detection zone directly beneath the bin lift mechanism. This zone is set specifically to protect workers in the highest-risk area, without creating unnecessary triggers outside the lift’s movement path.

2. Automatic Lift Halt

If the system detects a person within the defined zone, Bin Safe immediately stops the lift movement.

3. Audible and LED Warning Alarm

When the system is triggered, an external audible and LED alarm activates to alert nearby operatives that the lift has been stopped due to a safety detection.

4. Manual Reset via Control Module

A control module mounted on the side of the system includes a resume button. Once the zone is clear, operatives can press the button to resume lift operation. The system will only restart once Bin Safe confirms that the danger zone is clear.

Designed to Minimise False Triggers

One of the biggest concerns with automated safety systems is downtime caused by unnecessary stoppages. Bin Safe has been engineered specifically to address this.

Unlike traditional sensors that can trigger on any object (bins, debris, kerbs, bags, road furniture), Bin Safe’s AI detection is designed to recognise humans only, helping avoid needless interruptions during collections.

The detection zone is also calibrated on installation, allowing the system to be adjusted for different bin lift mechanisms and vehicle setups and minimise false intervention.

Developed with Industry Expertise

Bin Safe has been developed in partnership with respected industry specialists, including:

It also builds on proven ZONE AI technology already deployed across over 20,000 vehicles, using the same AI camera foundation adapted for this specific bin lift safety application.

Optional Enhancements Through the ZONE AI Ecosystem

Cloud Event Reporting via Parksafe On Demand

Add a DVR module to enable cloud-based event reporting and incident records through the Parksafe On Demand platform. This supports fleet managers with improved visibility, accountability, and safety auditing.

Multiple Camera Angles

Additional camera views can be added to expand coverage and support more complex vehicle layouts or operational requirements.

In-Cab Alerts and Display Options

Optional in-cab upgrades include:

  • in-cab LED display alerts
  • monitor display integration

These options improve driver and operative awareness during live collections.

Why Bin Safe Matters for UK Waste Fleets

For councils, contractors, and waste operators, safety performance is not just a priority — it’s an operational requirement.

Bin Safe supports:

  • reduced risk of serious injury around bin lift mechanisms
  • improved safety culture and operator confidence
  • reduced incident exposure and potential downtime
  • practical real-world operation without constant false triggers

Bin Safe: A Smarter Safety Standard for Waste Collection

The waste industry is evolving rapidly, and safety systems need to evolve with it. With Bin Safe, Parksafe Group is introducing a purpose-built solution that combines AI detection, precise calibration, and practical operator control to help reduce one of the most serious risks in waste collection operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bin Safe?

Bin Safe is an AI-powered safety system that prevents bin lift movement if a person is detected beneath the lifting mechanism, reducing the risk of crush injuries during waste collection.

How does Bin Safe stop the bin lift?

The system uses an AI camera calibrated to a defined danger zone. If a person enters the zone, Bin Safe triggers an automatic lift stop and activates an audible/LED alarm.

Does Bin Safe cause false triggers?

Bin Safe is designed to minimise false triggers by using AI detection focused on humans only. The detection zone is also tightly calibrated during installation.

Can Bin Safe be retrofitted to existing waste vehicles?

Yes. Bin Safe is designed as a retrofit solution for waste fleets operating automated bin lift mechanisms.

Can Bin Safe integrate with cloud reporting?

Yes. Bin Safe can be expanded with a DVR and cloud-based reporting via the Parksafe On Demand platform.
